Set on a quiet river islet a short drive from Hoi An's old town, Namia River Retreat offers a calm, restorative setting with a strong connection to Vietnamese culture. The resort combines private pool villas, wellbeing rooted in regional herbology, local experiences, and unhurried hospitality.

Some properties announce themselves the moment you arrive. Namia is the opposite. The shuttle boat slips along the Thu Bon River, and what unfolds is a landscape of thatched roofs, soft palms, and water — a place that asks you, gently, to slow down. We had read about Namia for months. Walking through it for the first time confirmed the suspicion: this is a house with a clear concept, executed with care.

The villas

There are one- and two-bedroom Pool Villas, each with a private pool. Regional materials and subtle Vietnamese references create a calm sense of place — woven cane, sun-warmed timber, soft linen. The two-bedroom villas are particularly well considered for guests travelling with children: separation, but not separation imposed.

The architecture refuses spectacle. Roofs sit low against the palms. Light filters in through bamboo screens, and the river is never far. It is a kind of luxury that takes a few hours to register — the kind that arrives through quiet rather than gesture.

Wellbeing, rooted in tradition

Wellbeing is woven into the stay through daily spa journeys, movement classes, and rituals inspired by Vietnamese tradition. The Lumina Wellbeing Spa is rooted in Southern Herbology — local herbs, traditional therapies, and a daily rhythm built around rest and recovery.

The morning ritual begins in the apothecary, where guests choose herbs for their parcel — peppermint, lemongrass, cinnamon, ginger. Then a herbal hammam, rest, a traditional therapy. It is the first hour of the day made deliberate. It changes the rest of the day. After three mornings, you stop checking your phone.

A house with a clear concept, executed with care — and a relationship to place that reads in the architecture, the food, and the rhythm of the day.

Experiences and culture

Hoi An's old town — ten minutes by car, or a longer, slower journey by shuttle boat.

Daily yoga, guided cycling tours along bamboo-shaded lanes, river experiences, and a calendar of cultural activities offer meaningful ways to connect with the heritage of Hoi An. The shuttle boat to the old town is, for our money, the best way to arrive: a slow approach across the water that turns a tourist destination into something quieter and stranger. Time the boat for dusk and the lanterns will already be lit.

Dining

Local ingredients, Vietnamese flavours, and a strong regional focus shape the culinary experience. Breakfast is a highlight, with carefully sourced products and a thoughtful mix of buffet and à la carte dishes. The Merchant on the mainland has a more open, public character; The Fisherman, by the pool, is private to guests and built around modern Vietnamese seafood. We have rarely had a fresher meal.

Why we keep recommending it

Namia is not the loudest property in Vietnam. That is precisely the point. We keep returning to it in conversation with guests because the elements — architecture, programme, food, location — work together rather than competing. It is a property we have visited, and one we trust to hold up the kind of journey we like to design.

A few quiet recommendations from our visit: take the Pool Villa with River View if you can. Book the boat to old town for late afternoon. Don't skip the morning ritual, even if you think you will. Save a long breakfast for your last day.
